Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves unwanted, distressing thoughts, images or urges, and repeated actions or rituals to ease that distress.
Common examples include worries about contamination, harm, or things not being “just right”. The responses can be washing, checking, counting, seeking reassurance or going over things in your head.
OCD can take up a lot of time and energy, and many people feel embarrassed about their thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are a recognised part of OCD. They don’t say anything about who you are.
How we can help
Our psychologists in Canberra City use evidence-based approaches for OCD, including cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP), where you gradually, and with support, face feared situations while practising not doing the compulsion. We set the pace together and include family where helpful, especially for children and teens.
